31% Of Youth & Young Adults Prescribed Psychotropic Medications Report Misuse
Of the approximately 37,700 U.S. youth (aged 12 to 17 years) and young adults (aged 18 to 25 years) who were prescribed a psychoactive drug in the past year, approximately 31% said they had misused a prescribed psychoactive drug in the past year. Psychoactive prescription medication misuse is defined as using psychoactive prescription medications in the past year in any way not directed or prescribed. Psychoactive medications include opioids, stimulants, tranquillizers, and sedatives.
