Adult Suicide Rates Rose More Slowly In Medicaid Expansion States
Despite a nationwide rise in suicide rates among adults ages 20 to 64 from 2000 to 2018, the rise was slower in states that expanded Medicaid than in non-expansion states. In expansion states, suicide rates increased from 13.94 per 100,000 residents during pre-expansion years (2000 through 2013), to 16.49 in the post-expansion years (2015 through 2018). In comparison, pre-expansion suicide rates in states that did not expand Medicaid went from 16.67 in pre-expansion to 19.77 in post-expansion.
