Among Beneficiaries With Dementia, Medicare Expenditures Highest For Those With Functional Limitations

Among Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with dementia, poor function, not cognition or behavioral/psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), was associated with more Medicare expenditures. One additional functional limitation among those with less than seven limitations was associated with added monthly Medicare spending of $123 per person. Functional limitations in this context included ability to prepare meals, handle finances, perform hobbies and routine household tasks, remember events or family and friends, understand print or televised information, or navigate familiar streets.
