While many medical fields utilize both subjective and objective measures in diagnosing patients and assessing treatment, psychiatry continues to rely mostly on clinical examination and patient recall, in part due to a lack of validated biomarkers. Many of the biomarkers investigated in psychiatry to date have been molecular biomarkers, but with the increasing adoption of digital technology in the mental health space, the potential for digital biomarkers in the diagnosis, assessment, and management of mental illness is growing.
