CMS Starts Audits Of Antipsychotic Use In Nursing Homes

On January 18, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began new audits to reduce the inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications for nursing home residents. CMS has started conducting targeted, off-site audits to determine whether nursing homes are accurately assessing and coding individuals with a schizophrenia diagnosis. The goal is to strengthen nursing home safety and transparency.
