Decreases In Local Psychiatric Bed Capacity May Be Associated With Subsequent Increases In Local Jail Populations

Decreases in local psychiatric bed capacity in the United States appear to be associated with subsequent increases in local jail populations. When inpatient psychiatric bed capacity declined, people in need of treatment were not necessarily treated at local general hospitals. On average, decreases in local inpatient psychiatric bed capacity was associated with a 256.2-person rise in the number of jail inmates. Increases in psychiatric bed capacity were associated with an average drop of 199.3 jail inmates.
