Emergency Visits For Attempted Suicide Essentially Unchanged Between 2006 & 2013

The annual rate of emergency department visits due to suicide attempt and self-inflicted injury fluctuated between 163.1 to 173.8 per 100,000 from 2006 through 2013. During the period, there were nearly 3.6 million emergency department visits due to a suicide attempt out of a total of more than 1 billion visits. During the same period, the rate of completed suicide increased from 11.0 suicide deaths per 100,000 population to 12.6 per 100,000 in 2013.
