The Role Of The Pharmacist In The Treatment Of Depression

Depression is one of the most common psychiatric illnesses affecting approximately 8% of American adults in a given year. Despite the high prevalence of depression, it is often not adequately managed.  Pharmacists are well placed to have a role in depression management across practice settings, complementing the role of general practitioners and psychiatric providers.

In this webinar, we will discuss the role of the pharmacist in the treatment of depression.

Megan Ehret, PharmD, MS, BCCP Dr. Ehret is a graduate of the University of Toledo where she completed her BS and PharmD degrees, and she went on to complete a Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency at the Louis Stokes VAMC, under the direction of Matthew Fuller. She then completed a Psychopharmacology and Pharmacogenomics Fellowship at Nova Southeastern University, under the direction of Gary Levin. After training she received her initial faculty appointment at the University of Connecticut and gained tenure during her stay there. While at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Ehret served as the Vice-Chair of the IRB, Director of Practices for the Center for Correctional Health Networks, and a faculty member for Project: ECHO: Buprenorphine. Currently, her full-time role is a Professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy with a practice site at The University of Maryland Mid Town Campus. Additionally, she also has the privilege of working with the State of Maryland Medicaid Program in evaluating antipsychotic use in the state. She is a Past-President of CPNP and is the current Section Editor for the Pharmacist Corner for PsychU. Dr. Ehret has numerous publications and book chapters describing psychotropic medication adherence and the role of pharmacogenomics in medication selection. Her current interests include psychotropic medication adherence and the advancement of the psychiatric pharmacist in practice.

Richard Silvia, PharmD, BCPP Dr. Silvia earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Rhode Island.  Afterwards, he completed a two-year residency/fellowship in psychiatric pharmacy practice at the Institute of Living in Hartford, CT and affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy.  He then joined the faculty of MCPHS University in 2001, where he is currently a Professor of Pharmacy Practice.  Dr. Silvia maintains a practice site at the Codman Square Health Center, a federally-qualified community health center in Dorchester, MA.  He maintains a busy collaborative practice in integrated behavioral health within the primary care clinics of the center.  He is Board Certified in Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy (BCPP), and is active in the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) and American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP).  His research interests include measuring the effectiveness of clinical pharmacists in novel practice settings and studying the adverse effects observed with psychotropic medications and the appropriate management and treatment of these adverse effects.
