Illinois Enacts Medicaid Mental Health Network Adequacy Law

On July 23, 2021, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed legislation to require health insurers to ensure network adequacy for mental health and addiction treatment services. They must ensure that beneficiaries can access services within 30 miles or 30 minutes driving distance. If the network does not meet that standard, then the insurer must cover the cost of an out-of-network provider organization. The law goes into effect for health plans, starting January 1, 2022.
