Psychiatrists Scores On 2020 Medicare Merit-Based Incentive Payment System Lower Than Other Physicians

Compared to other outpatient clinical professionals participating in the 2020 Medicare Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), psychiatrists had performance scores about five percentage points lower than other physicians, at 84.0 compared to 89.7. As a result, psychiatrists were less likely to earn a bonus or positive payment adjustment to their Medicare part B allowed charges. Psychiatrists were much more likely to be assessed a performance penalty compared to other physicians, affecting 6.1% of psychiatrists compared to 2.9% of other physicians.
