Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with significant individual, family, and societal burden of illness.
While a vast majority of patients achieve remission from the manic syndrome within six months following an index episode or hospitalization, there is often persistence of subsyndromal mood symptoms, depression, anxiety, cognitive and functional impairment, reduced ability to work, and increased risk of suicide.
