When inmates are released from jail or prison and are not equipped for independent living, like individuals with a serious mental illness (SMI), the chances of success are low. Homelessness and recidivism are an all too frequent result. However, California is leading the nation in terms of corrections “in reach” programming paid by Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program, through the CalAIM Justice-Involved initiative.
