Schizophrenia & Dementia Dual Diagnosis Increased After CMS Reporting Requirement For Nursing Home Antipsychotic Prescriptions
After the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) began requiring public reporting of nursing home antipsychotic use, the proportion of residents with different forms of dementia also diagnosed with schizophrenia increased. Between 2011 and 2017, the likelihood of having a schizophrenia diagnosis increased 1.9 percentage points among residents with dementia who were White, and by an additional 1.3 percentage points beyond that for residents with dementia who were Black.
