The Other Pandemic: Burnout & The Mental Crisis

As the months wear on and COVID-19 continues to threaten the physical wellbeing of people across the globe another crisis is affecting even the healthy. Burnout — defined as “emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and (a lack of) personal accomplishment”1 — is taking increasing toll as COVID-19 disrupts schools, work, and schedules. Isolation and social distancing protocols have been in place for months and in some regions are becoming more intense as the virus spikes and cities take preventative measures. Mental health has been identified as a crucial piece of the of the response to the pandemic. It, “should be treated as an integral and cross-cutting component in public health emergency responses as part of a range of,”2 initiatives that should address the issue.
