11% Telehealth Visits Need In-Person Follow-Up Care Within A Week

In 2021 and 2022, about 11% of telehealth visits resulted in an in-person follow-up visit a week later for the same clinical reason. Most double visits were for behavioral health diagnoses and for select chronic conditions, such as diabetes and back pain.  

The behavioral health diagnoses requiring in-person follow-up to a telehealth visit included stress reactions and adjustment disorders, major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, opioid-related disorders, bipolar disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, alcohol-related disorders, schizoaffective disorders, and persistent mood (affective) disorders.
