Serious Psychological Stress Tops 13% In 2020, Up From 3.9% In 2018
Reported prevalence of serious psychological distress among U.S. adults was 13.6% in April 2020 and 13% in July 2020, largely due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This compares with 3.9% of adults reporting serious psychological distress in April 2018. More than 60% of adults with serious distress reported that COVID-19-related disruptions to education, employment, and finances negatively affected their mental health. About 35% of adults with serious distress cited inability to obtain health care as a contributing factor.
