Early Intervention in Bipolar Disorder

During this webinar, Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Tohen will discuss the importance of early intervention in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Together they will share their clinical experience and discuss the implications of early versus delayed intervention and identify and explore potential treatment options in bipolar disorder.

Joseph F. Goldberg, MD is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He attended college at the University of Chicago, graduate school in neuroscience at the University of Illinois, and medical school at Northwestern University. He completed his residency and chief residency in psychiatry, and fellowship in psychopharmacology, at the Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he later served on the faculty and was site Principal Investigator at Weill-Cornell Medical Center for the NIMH STEP-BD program. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers on topics related mainly to the treatment and clinical features of bipolar disorder, as well as three books on bipolar disorder and psychopharmacology, most recently “Managing the Side Effects of Psychotropic Medications, 2nd edition” published in 2019 by American Psychiatric Publishing, and the forthcoming “Practical Psychopharmacology” by Cambridge University Press. He serves on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology and is on the editorial boards for a number of peer-reviewed journals. His research has been awarded funding from NARSAD, NIMH, the Stanley Foundation, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Dr. Goldberg is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and has been listed for many years in Best Doctors in America and Castle Connolly’s “America’s Top Doctors.”

Mauricio Tohen, MD, DrPH, MBA, is a University Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center, Albuquerque NM. From 2009 to 2013 he was a Professor of Psychiatry and The Krus Endowed Chair in Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Tohen received his medical degree from the National University of Mexico and his Doctor of Public Health degree in Epidemiology from Harvard University. His postdoctoral training included a residency in Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, a clinical fellowship at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and a teaching fellowship in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. From 1988 to 1997, Dr. Tohen was the Clinical Director of the Bipolar and Psychotic Disorders Program at McLean Hospital. From 1997 to 2008 he was a member of Lilly Research Laboratories reaching the senior-most scientific level of Distinguished Lilly Scholar. In 2009 he joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as the Head of the Division of Mood and Anxiety Disorders. Dr. Tohen received a National Service Award in Psychiatric Epidemiology from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Harvard University. He also received a FIRST award from the NIMH, the Pope Award from McLean Hospital, and a NARSAD Young Investigator Award and the Simon Bolivar Award from the American Psychiatric Association. In 2014 he was named by Thomson Reuter’s “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds, 2014”. Honorees were the scientists who ranked in the Top 1 percent by citations of their published work in 21 broad fields between 2002 and 2012.
