Many individuals incarcerated have a serious mental illness; indeed, there are more mentally ill people in the jail/prison system than in the hospital. Inmates with mental illness remain in jail longer, they are at higher risk of being assaulted, and they present behavioral health management problems that may result in isolation compared with other inmates.
