Victimization, Discrimination & Suicide Risk In LGBTQ College Students
LGBTQ college students may be especially vulnerable to suicide. It is the second leading cause of death among college students, and the lifetime risk of suicide attempt is markedly higher for LGBTQ individuals compared with the general population. For sexual minorities—individuals who identify as lesbian or gay—it is nearly three times as high, 11% vs. 4%. For those who are gender minorities—individuals who do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth—the risk is fourfold, 40% vs. 4%.
