First-episode mania (FEM) is a crucial time in the disease course of bipolar disorder (BD) because several cognitive changes are thought to occur during this time. There is considerable debate on whether cognitive deficits are present in patients who are asymptomatic before occurrence of FEM and whether they continue to accumulate in patients who are in remission after experiencing FEM.
