Key Messages

This large cohort study examined the impact of current and remitted depression and anxiety disorders and other factors on medication nonadherence.
The overall rate of medication nonadherence in individuals with depression and/or anxiety was 44%.
All current and remitted depression and anxiety were associated with medication nonadherence, compared with individuals who had never received a depression or anxiety diagnosis. Alcohol dependence was also a risk factor for nonadherence.
Older age and antidepressant use were associated with improved adherence.
