Treatment Pathways Across Cultures
Understanding the cultural aspects of treating bipolar disease offers invaluable insights into how diverse ethnic backgrounds influence the perception, diagnosis and the management of this condition. Appreciating these differences can improve communication between healthcare providers and patients and lead to more improved, personalized and effective healthcare treatment plans. During this webinar, Sr. MSL Dr. Michael Aldape will be talking with Dr. Crystal Clark and Dr. Mauricio Tohen as they guide us on a lively discussion addressing the impact of culture across treatment pathways for bipolar disorder, and how cultural context can be integrated into treatment strategies for this condition.

MoreDr. Clark is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. She is also a scientist at Women’s College Research Institute and will serve as the Associate Head of Research at the Women’s College Hospital. Dr. Clark is a past president of the Marcé of North America and serves on the board of directors of Marcé International. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Northwestern University and her Master of Science and Medical Doctorate from the University of Louisville, Kentucky (2006). She completed her adult psychiatry training and served as chief resident at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, USA (2010). Prior to completing her MSc in Clinical Investigation Sciences (2012), she completed fellowship training in clinical research and reproductive psychiatry while also serving on faculty at the Baylor College of Medicine/Michael E. Debakey VA as well as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center/ Pittsburgh VA Healthcare Systems. Prior to joining UofT, she served as an Associate Professor at Northwestern University, Chicago. There she was a Staff Psychiatrist at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital; and Clinical Director of the Women’s Outpatient Program, Asher Center for the Study and Treatment of Depressive Disorders. She also co-founded and co-directed and advanced training fellowship in women’s and reproductive mental health.

MoreMauricio Tohen, MD, DrPH, MBA, is a University Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center, Albuquerque NM. From 2009 to 2013 he was a Professor of Psychiatry and The Krus Endowed Chair in Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Tohen received his medical degree from the National University of Mexico and his Doctor of Public Health degree in Epidemiology from Harvard University. His postdoctoral training included a residency in Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, a clinical fellowship at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and a teaching fellowship in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. From 1988 to 1997, Dr. Tohen was the Clinical Director of the Bipolar and Psychotic Disorders Program at McLean Hospital. From 1997 to 2008 he was a member of Lilly Research Laboratories reaching the senior-most scientific level of Distinguished Lilly Scholar. In 2009 he joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as the Head of the Division of Mood and Anxiety Disorders. Dr. Tohen received a National Service Award in Psychiatric Epidemiology from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Harvard University. He also received a FIRST award from the NIMH, the Pope Award from McLean Hospital, and a NARSAD Young Investigator Award and the Simon Bolivar Award from the American Psychiatric Association. In 2014 he was named by Thomson Reuter’s “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds, 2014”.
