Schizophrenia is a significant cause of disability worldwide requiring lifelong use of first- and second-generation antipsychotic medication. Common side effects of second-generation antipsychotics include akathisia, sedation, metabolic abnormalities, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction. While the impact of having these side effects on patient discontinuation and overall adherence to therapy is accepted, less is known about their impact on daily functioning and emotional wellbeing.
