43% Of Rural Hospitals Have Negative Operating Margins

Of the nearly 2,200 rural hospitals in the United States, on average 43% have more expenses than revenue (a negative operating margin) at 1.8%, and 22.7% are at risk of closing due to negative margins over several years.  Rural hospitals in Medicaid expansion states have an average operating margin of 2.6%, and 39% of rural hospitals have a negative operating margin.
