Virtual Event – Suicide Awareness, Assessment, & Prevention Strategies
This is a Virtual Event for PsychU members in Broome, Steuben, Chemung, Tioga, and Tompkins counties, NY.
In this presentation, the objectives are to:
- Review common terminology used in suicidology
- Elucidate statistics associated with suicide globally and in the United States
- Discuss the possible relationship between suicide and psychiatric illnesses: major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia
- Highlight various suicide assessment tools
- Present current research on the neurobiology of suicide Provide suicide prevention resources and insight into ongoing research

MoreDr. Bennett Doughty grew up in Winthrop, Maine, and earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree with honors from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy in 2016. Following graduation, Doughty completed two years of residency training at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven, CT specializing in psychiatric pharmacy. He is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) and a Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP). Dr. Doughty joined the Binghamton School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2018 as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. He also serves as a clinical psychiatric pharmacy specialist at the Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA, where he has created an integrated outpatient psychiatric clinic within primary care. Dr. Doughty is the program director of the Binghamton University Opioid Overdose Prevention Program (BU OOPP), the director of Binghamton University’s and SUNY Upstate Medical University’s Rural and Underserved Service Track (TRUST), and a Community-Engaged Teaching Fellow, recognized by the Binghamton University Center for Civic Engagement. Dr. Doughty’s research interests primarily focus on the engagement of patients in substance use disorder treatment but also have expanded to include focus on interprofessional care in underserved communities.
