Although they are not yet commonly used, there is evidence supporting the efficacy of Community-of-Care Programs (CCPs) for the management of patients with mental illness.
The impact of established CCPs in Madrid was assessed retrospectively in 250 patients with schizophrenia in 2002, demonstrating a drop of 0.18 hospital admissions per patient (95% CI: 0.06–0.03; p = 0.003) and a decrease of 8.93 in-hospital days between the years before and after implementation of the CCP (95% CI: 2.74–15.11; p = 0.005).
