Lifetime Stressful Experiences Worsen Risk Of Developing Alzheimer’s
Stressful experiences during a person’s lifetime worsen memory and thinking in early old age, which raises the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. African-Americans are at greater risk than non-Hispanic white adults.
Stressful experiences are defined as those experience that cause both physical and emotional responses that require increased adaptive demands that tax or exceed adaptive resources. Stressful experiences may include educational difficulties, interpersonal conflicts, financial insecurity, legal/justice system issues, serious health events and psychosocial/physical trauma.
