Overdose Mortality Rates Twice As High For Men In 2020-2021 Than For Women

Overdose mortality rates were two-to-three times higher for men ages 15 to 74 than for women of the same age in the United States during 2020 and 2021. For synthetic opioids, the overdose mortality rate for men was 2.5 higher than for women, and for heroin, it was 2.9 times higher. For psychostimulants, the mortality rate for men was 2.4 times higher than the rate for women. For cocaine, it was 2.8 times higher.
